when it all feels like too much. The latest in the best-selling Can
I Tell You About... series describes what self-harm is, along with
the wide range of behaviours that qualify, why teens do it, and how
to get help if you feel the need to self-harm. Reflecting on the
different aspects of self-harming behaviour, including treatment of
injuries and scars, this concise introduction dispels common myths
and offers helpful resources to break the cycle of self-harm. By

alternative avenues for children and young adults to pursue when
dealing with big feelings, such as professional counselling,
distraction, and friends and family. This easy-to-read guide is
suitable for readers 7+, along with their parents, teachers, and

First published as an oversized clothbound volume in 2009, Botanica
Magnifica has received widespread acclaim from the scientific and
artistic communities. In the words of an ARTnews critic, Singer's
flowers and plants, photographed "in large scale and exquisite
detail, emerge from the shadows in a manner evocative of Old Master
paintings." Now Abbeville is to offer this masterwork of botanical
photography as a pocket-sized hardcover book, in their trademarked
Tiny Folio format. Mirroring the design of the larger edition, this
little volume is organised into five alphabetically arranged
sections: (I) Orchidaceae, presenting the full diversity of
orchids; (II) Florilegium, portraying the complexity and beauty of
flowers; (III) Proteus, illustrating plant forms perfectly adapted
for survival; (IV) Zingiberaceae, a tribute to the fascinating
ginger family and (V) Botanicus, a selection of beautiful and
bizarre specimens from the Smithsonian's research collection. Each
pictured plant is accompanied by a clear and accessible description
of its botany, geography, history, and conservation. With its
marvellous reproductions and fascinating text, the Tiny Folio of
Botanica Magnifica is a charming miniature version of one of the
most impressive volumes of natural history ever published.
Botanica Magnifica features two hundred and fifty stunning
photographs of rare and exotic plants and flowers by Hasselblad
Laureate Award winner Jonathan Singer. Botanica Magnifica features

Award winner Jonathan Singer, representing-in the words of an
ARTnews critic-rare or exotic plants and flowers "in large scale
and exquisite detail, emerging from the shadows in a manner
evocative of Old Master paintings." The original edition of
Botanica Magnifica, consisting of five lavishly hand-bound volumes,
was limited to just ten copies, the first of which was recently
donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The extra-large
"double-elephant" format of that edition was chosen in homage to
the famous double-elephant folio of The Birds of America, and
indeed, Botanica Magnifica is one of the few works of natural
history ever to rival Audubon's magnum opus in its scope and
artistry. In praise of the double-elephant folio of Botanica
Magnifica, the Smithsonian's Chairman of Botany attested, "Everyone
who has seen the photographs . . . has been tremendously impressed
with the power, scale, and depth of the work." Now Singer's
remarkable images are available to the public for the first time in
this baby-elephant folio of Botanica Magnifica. Like the larger
edition, this volume is organized into five alphabetically arranged
sections, each introduced by a gatefold page that displays one
extraordinary plant at a luxurious size. Each pictured plant is
accompanied by a clear and accessible description of its botany,
geography, folklore, history, and conservation. With its marvelous
reproductions and fascinating text, the baby-elephant folio of
Botanica Magnifica is one of the most impressive volumes of natural
history ever published. This volume is also available in a
leatherbound, slipcased edition.
Having the knowledge and capacity to deliver therapy to a diverse
population is recognized as benefiting client-therapist
relationships and producing positive clinical outcomes. In fact,
the APA requires that psychologists be aware of and respect the
cultural characteristics of their clients which includes
psychologists being aware of any biases and prejudice they may
hold. Being aware of cultural characteristics, which include age,
gender, ethnicity, race, religion and other cultural factors, is
important. In the United States, minority ethnic groups are growing
substantially, with 28% of the U.S. population identifying as races
other than white (U.S. Census, 2016). Additionally, approximately
65 million people in America speak a foreign language that is not
English, with over 25 million people having limited English
language proficiency. With a diverse pool of clients, helping
professionals should be better prepared to work with diverse
clients. This handbook offers clinicians a comprehensive resource
with which to work with diverse populations. The myriad discussions
among the chapters include: Ethical guidelines for working with
culturally diverse clients Cultural considerations in psychological
assessment and evaluation Behavioral health service delivery with
culturally diverse clients Cross-cultural factors in the treatment
of trauma related disorders Cultural considerations in the
assessment and behavioral treatment of substance use disorders
Handbook of Cultural Factors in Behavioral Health expertly offers
clinicians a comprehensive set of resources and tools that will
assist them working with diverse clients. Clinicians working with
culturally diverse clients, as well as researchers and students
learning about how cultural factors are relevant to the helping
profession will all find this volume an integral addition to their
library.
Jonathan Singer's witty, erudite book is a celebration of
rationality and an urgent call to make use of intelligence and
reason to better cope with human problems. Emphasizing the
importance of rationality's greatest achievement, modern science,
Singer - one of the foremost biologists of our era - argues that
for the first time in several million years humanity has at its
disposal the tools for an objective understanding of the external
world. Singer demonstrates that, today more than ever, the fullest
exercise of rationality is essential if humanity is to rein in a
runaway technology and control an explosion of the human population
that together threaten to devastate life on this planet within only
a few more generations. The intrusion of reason and rationality
into our largely irrational world has been painfully slow, uneven,
and often unwelcome. Singer explains that for rationalists the
founding of modern science - which took place only a few hundred
years ago - has overthrown many of the myths of conventional wisdom
and dogmas of traditional religions. Yet these beliefs still hold
sway over the irrational world, obstructing efforts to deal
sensibly with the problematic future of mankind. The core of "The
Splendid Feast of Reason" is an engaging and accessible account of
the knowledge that modern science provides. Singer offers an
absorbing discussion of how life works, of the nature of
reproduction, aging, and death, and of the necessary fragility of
the individual life compared to the resilience of life itself. He
emphasizes the primary role of the genes in determining the
structural organization and the behaviors of living things,
including humans. He also stresses the nature and mechanisms of
biological evolution, mechanisms that have now been placed in
jeopardy because of human ignorance and irrational appetites.
Finally, Singer delves into the enigma of the real world with its
irrational and chaotic operations and offers suggestions of how a
rationalist can not only survive, but thrive in it.

In Fine Bonsai: Art and Nature, the finest extant achievements in
the art of bonsai are seen together for the first time, through the
lens of renowned botanical photographer Jonathan Singer. This
magnificent deluxe volume is the result of an extensive
photographic campaign, in the course of which Singer was granted
unprecedented access to the most respected public and private
collections in Japan and the United States, including the mecca of
bonsai, the Omiya Bonsai Village of Saitama, Japan, where
photography is normally prohibited. 300 stunning full-page images
and four lavish gatefolds present bonsai of all types, from quiet
representations of nature to bold sculptural forms. The
horticultural and aesthetic characteristics of each bonsai are
concisely and authoritatively described in the narrative captions
by William Valavanis, head of the International Bonsai Arboretum in
Rochester, New York. And because the container is considered an
integral part of any bonsai-indeed, the literal meaning of 'bonsai'
is 'tray plant' - the book also includes some 25 photographs of
traditional bonsai containers, with descriptions. A further
sequence of 25 photographs is devoted to the related art of
suiseki, or miniature stone landscapes displayed in the same
manner, and often alongside, bonsai. With his groundbreaking first
book, Botanica Magnifica, Jonathan Singer established a new style
of botanical photography, characterised by an exceptional clarity
of detail and richness of colour, as well as a painterly
chiaroscuro. These qualities are just as evident in the present
volume; Singer photographs each bonsai with an artist's - one might
even say a portraitist's - eye. Whereas most books on bonsai aim to
instruct readers on techniques of care and cultivation, Singer's
book takes the reader on a visual journey. His images encompass
many different species, from azalea to red maple, as well as a
variety of blossoms and fruits. Alluring and serene, Singer's
photographs make the experience of leafing through Bonsai not
unlike entering a real Japanese garden. Fine Bonsai: Art and Nature
not only documents the masterpieces of an ancient horticultural
art, but is a masterpiece in itself. A portion of the proceeds of
this book will benefit the Japanese Red Cross.
